Local elections are an interesting way to look at how the political climate is changing. However, when people look at these results, it’s easy to misunderstand the results and come to the wrong conclusions.
One way to try and get a clear message is to examine the results of election gallup polls. If we look at these results as a microcosm of national or international opinion, what conclusions are reached? It may be the case that wrong conclusions are reached, though. To get the best person suitable, it is believed that local votes are the best option. It gives more respect to all kinds of people regardless of their density compared with the whole population.
In the Middle East, local elections are used as a platform for discussion of water supply and power issues, and so forth. The idea is to select from those who follow rulings given by higher authorities, or to choose those with new ideas. It is probable that local elections here are a good guide to the mood of the electorate since at national level, there may be less freedom to choose.
In the United Kingdom however local elections became a landmark allowing even 18-20 years to also be a candidate for council seats. Council elections in UK are held with great interest. Internet and telephone voting have been suggested as ways to improve turnout in the local elections, with mixed opinion as to their acceptability. With the results it was obvious that in almost all the districts the councils have achieved a different result to the overall general elections, and these local results are hence regarded as a giving more authority on the mood of people living in that area as to how they feel about the choice of councillors.
Many people in the southern UK consider the London mayoral election as very important. One of the bigger landmarks of this event was the win of Conservative candidate Boris Johnson in 2008. This was an unusual decision because the previous holder, Ken Livingston of the socialists (the Labour Party), was considered by most as an excellent mayor - a good city manager. However, the tide is currently turning against the socialists due to their over-strict national management, and faux pas such as the banking crash and corruption among MPs. In the UK, an MP is the equivalent of a Congressman. Unfortunately, many have been found to be claiming fraudulent expenses, which was apparently permitted under the socialists.
We can see the tide turning clearly against the Labour Party now, and the next election may see the Conservatives coming back into power after a long absence. Socialist power traditionally works well for general population social benefits, with the drawbacks of increased regulation and the possibility of uncorrected excessive perks for the lucky few at the top. The Tories on the other hand stand for increased freedom but less social protections. Scandals tend to be more of an individual nature rather than blanket minor corruption.
